How to Easily Hard Reset All Echo Devices

Amazon Echo devices are excellent smart home gadgets to have around your home. They’re meant to act as your personal assistant, as well as being a hub for controlling smart home devices and automation. 

Now, if you wish to sell your echo Device or you are planning on giving it away to someone, it will be a good idea for you to perform a factory/hard reset on the device. Considering that Daily, an echo device can receive from 50-100 command, some of those commands may contain sensitive personal information. You won’t want someone to gain access to.

Your echo device may also start developing faults or misbehaving, and most times, performing a Factory/Hard reset on the device may fix most of those issues. 

In this post, I will be covering how to reset the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus, Echo Show, Echo Dot, Echo Auto, Echo Input, and the Echo Sub. if you also would like to reset Amazon Ring Doorbells i wrote a post about that Here.

Depending on the echo speaker generation, the reset process may differ, and I have them all listed below. 

First Generation: 

  • Locate the hard reset hole at the base of your Echo Speaker. 
  • With a Paper clip or metal pin press and hold the button for some seconds. 
  • The ring of light around the echo speaker should turn off and then back on to an orange color. Indicating that’s it’s on setup mode.
  • Now your Echo Speaker has been reset. 

Second Generation: 

  • To reset your Echo second-gen speaker.
  • Press and hold the volume down button and microphone off button simultaneously for some seconds. 
  • The light ring around the echo speaker will turn off and on, with an orange color, indicating that’s it’s on setup mode. 
  • Now your second-generation echo speaker is reset.

First Generation

  • To reset the first-generation Echo dot
  • First, locate the hard reset hole at the base of the echo dot. 
  • Then, press and hold the button for 25 seconds, with a paper clip or metal pin. 
  • The light around the echo dot will turn off and then on, this time changing to an orange color, indicating it’s ready for setup.
  • And you are done. 

Second Generation

  • To reset your second-generation Echo dot
  • press and hold the mic off and volume down button for at least 25 seconds. 
  • Afterward, the ring of light will turn off and then on, with an orange color, meaning it’s on setup mode. 

Third Generation

  • To reset your third-generation Echo Dot
  •  press and hold the Action button for about 25 seconds
  • The ring of light around the Echo dot will turn off and back on, with an orange color indicating it’s ready for setup. 

How To Hard Reset Amazon Echo Plus: 

First Generation

  • First, locate the reset buttonhole at the base of the echo plus.
  • With a paper clip or metal pin, press and hold the button for at least 25 seconds.
  • The light around the Echo plus should turn off and on, but this time change to an orange color, tell you it’s ready for setup. 

If you only wish to reset the device ( maybe because of a fault), but still keep all your existing smart home Automation and Connections

  • With the paper clip press and quickly release the reset button. 
  • Your Echo plus should reset but still keep existing Connections. 

Second Generation

  • Press and hold the microphone off and volume down button of your Echo plus. 
  • The ring of light around the device will then turn off and on, this time with an orange color, meaning it is in setup mode. 
  • If you wish to keep all existing smart home connection. 
  • Press and hold the microphone off and on button simultaneously for 20 secs. 
  • And you are done.

How To Hard Reset Echo Show and Echo Spot:

  • To reset these devices 
  • First swipe down from the top of the screen
  • Then navigation to Settings > Device Options
  • Then tap on the Factory Default button. 
  • The device will then restart to the setup page. 
  • To reset without losing smart home Connections. 
  • Navigate to Settings > Device Options.
  • Then tap on the Reset to Factory Default, but Retain smart home device connections. 

How To Hard Reset Echo Auto: 

  • To reset the Amazon echo auto
  • Press and hold the action button for at least 25 seconds. 
  • The ring of light will then turn off and turn on, this time with an orange color, meaning it’s on setup mode. 
  • And you just successfully reset the Echo Auto.

  • Press and hold the action button for about 25 seconds. 
  • After that, the device will reset to its factory settings.

How To Hard Reset Echo Sub:

  • To reset the Echo sub
  • Press and hold the Action for at least 25 seconds
  • And the device will reboot to its factory settings.

How to reset Echo devices from the Alexa App

Alexa also gives you the ability to reset an echo Device directly from the app. This option comes useful when you are not physically with the specific Echo Device. To reset the Echo devices with your mobile phone: 

Open the Alexa app

At the bottom right corner, tap on the Devices button. 

Then select Echo and Alexa.

Now Select the Echo Device you want to reset. 

Then locate the “Device is registered to.” Tab and press the deregister button.

A pop-up menu will appear asking you to confirm your choice. 

And you are done.

How to delete your Alexa History: 

If you don’t want to perform a hard reset on the device, but only want to clear your Alexa history. Then you can achieve that by saying, “Alexa, Delete everything I have said.” And Alexa will clear your entire command history. NOTE: that this only works if you already have it enabled on your Alexa account. 

If it is not enabled on your Alexa account. To enable this feature, 

  • Tap on the three dash icon at the top.
  • Then navigate to Settings > Alexa privacy > Review Voice History.
  • Now toggle on ” Enable Deletion by voice” and confirm your choice.
