When it comes to controlling our Nest devices, using the Google Assistant has always been the norm, but only a few know that Alexa can also control some of your Nest devices. Thanks to the Nest skill in Alexa, you can now change your temperature in your Nest thermostat or live stream videos from your Nest cam.
This is cool since, over the years, this has been an issue for users whose smart homes were built on the Alexa Eco-system. In this post, I will be guiding you on how to successfully link your Nest thermostat, Cameras, and Video Doorbell with Amazon Alexa. As well as going over some voice commands you can use to control Nest devices.
How to link your Nest devices with Alexa:
To link your nest device with Amazon’s Alexa Follow these simple steps

Download the Amazon Alexa app from your respective device store.
Open the Alexa app
Tap on the menu icon at the top left of the screen
Then, tap on the Skills and games section.
You will be taken to a page. Tap on the search icon on the top right. And search for Nest.
Select the Google nest and click on the “Enable To Use” button to enable the skill.
You will now be redirected to the Google sign-in page. Enter the details linked to your Nest account and continue.
Then, Allow Amazon Alexa to access your Google account.
now tap on the “Discover Devices” button to bring up all your nest device.
Select the Devices you wish to control with Alexa
You are set.
How to control Your Nest devices with Amazon Alexa:
Now that you have linked your Nest device to Alexa, it’s time to have some fun. To control your nest device with Alexa, you have a few options. You can either use your voice on Alexa enabled devices, like the echo speaker, or use the Alexa app on your device.
The most seamless method and the most obvious one will be with your voice, and below I have listed some voice commands you can use to control your Nest thermostat, Cams, and Video doorbell.
Note: When linking your Nest device to Nest account, you choose a name for the device and when giving out voice commands Alexa will only work when the device name is included in the command, but for the sake of this post I will be using (Device name) and (Cam name) in place of your Nest device name.
Alexa commands for your Nest thermostat:
- “Alexa, what’s the temperature in the house?”
- “Alexa, what temperature is my (device name) set to?
- “Alexa, set the (device name) temperature to (X) degrees.”
- “Alexa, turn my (device name) temperature to (X) degrees.”
- “Alexa, decrease the (device name) temperature.”
- “Alexa, increase the (device name) temperature.”
- “Alexa, make my (device name) colder by (X) degrees.
- “Alexa, make my (device name) warmer by (X) degrees.
Alexa commands for Nest Cameras and video doorbell:
If you have an Alexa enabled smart display, like the Amazon Echo Show you can pull up a live video, feeds from your Nest Cameras and video doorbells with these commands:
- “Alexa, show feed from the (cam name)”
- “Alexa, show (cam name) feed”
- “Alexa, show (cam name)”
- “Alexa, hide (cam name)”
- “Alexa, hide (cam name) feed.”
